What Do We Think of Mercy Killing
Mercy killing is the act of painlessly killing a person who is seriously ill and who is going to die, in order to prevent them from suffering more pain. "Euthanasia" is derived from Greek, means "happiness" of death. It includes two meanings. One is pain-free death; the other is painless death surgery. The issue of euthanasia in our country has not yet been formally discussed, but the advanced medical technologies which sharpen the question of euthanasia have been imported.
The practice is controversial. There are two opposing ideas. (1)Those who support euthanasia insist that the patient has the right to make decisions about his own death and that he should be allowed to refuse treatment if he chooses.(2)Those who are against euthanasia think that it belittles the value of human life, brings a devastating impact on society, deals a blow to public confidence in doctors. And we think that keeping an incurable patient alive is meaningless and that this only prolongs his suffering so that we agree with euthanasia.
People always say that patients have the common law right to take medical treatment. Certainly we think people also have the right to refuse treatment to reduce the pain. We need make mercy killing become legally. Doctors should be protected from prosecution if they shorten a patient's life expectancy with pain-killing drugs.
Take an example which I have searched from the Internet, Holland where Active euthanasia is legal is widely regarded as one of the world's most civilized countries. Then we think that:(1) as long as people do not endanger others, social and national interest, putting an end to its "one's remaining years" is not a bad thing which will help improve the quality of human life. (2)To recognize the legitimacy of euthanasia reflects the people's right to life respect. (Including the right to survival and death) (3)Although the life-saving medical is ethics requirement, when people are under the pressure to rescue a people with an unbearable pain and be voluntary to die, it is little practical significance. This is a considerable loss of social benefits, causing a large number of material and financial resources waste, resulting in deterioration of resources allocation, being contrary to the market economy principles of the allocation of resources.
Since we have already agreed to the legalization of euthanasia, what can we do for mercy killing? In my opinion, each of us should talk to whom we loved and who live around us openly about euthanasia to make more and more people know it. We can find out some communities which emphasize care and comfort for the dying and support their growth, we also should keep our right to be informed about the issue of euthanasia from the media. Then we are sure that our actions will be more advisable when we face them who are in serious pain.
At last, it is worth emphasizing that we should establish a scientific system of euthanasia to maintain social order and stability. A system running needs restraint of a good system.
Euthanasia will continue to test for human sense and conscience.
